Hey Morris, you mentioned that rail systems are available for FALs. Could you provide some info or point me in the right direction please? It would be much appreciated.

DA Arms (www.dsarms.com) is your source for the rail systems. They have them for short or standard handguard lengths. However, they aren't inexpensive and they add a bit of weight but they offer options.

DsArms Sa58 Tactical comes with rails on it's forearm and top. You will spend about 1,500 for the rifle.

At close range, 75 grain 5.56 rounds (don't care who the manufacturer is) chip away at cinder block walls while 175 grain 7.62 x 51 (.308 Winchester) rounds quickly destroy cinder block walls and (with a double or triple tap) can neutralize objects taking cover behind the wall.

Watch the LA bank robbery documentary and hear the testimony of LAPD officers taking cover behind a cinder block wall when the bank robbers opened up on the wall with their AK's (7.62 x 39).

5.56 and .308 platforms are both mission specific and each have their tactical advantages.

Train with, and carry, both...

I am going to get a .308.

How much does a 21 inch compared to a 16 inch barrel affect range?

I know I could operate with a 21 inch in CQB. Tactics change but remain the same.

Uzi,
Springfield SOCOM's (16" barrel) and Scouts (18" barrel) are time proven, dependable rifle style .308's.

If you want a carbine .308, check out Bushmaster, DPMS and Rock River. We see these three in the sandbox with 16" and 20" barrels but they seem more suseptible to sand jamming than are Springfields and European assault rifles.

European assault rifles impress me as being as reliable as Springfields in sand/dust conditions. There are many euro .308's on the market (7.62 x 51), I've fam fired most of them and I'm inclined toward the simple design, feel and reputation of the FN and FAL. I'd probably go with a FAL, 20" barrel, rail top and fold away stock. Check out GG&G's bipod...works great in crappy conditions.

After the AK-47 (7.62 x 39) we probably see more FAL's in the field than any other 7.62 assault rifle...FAL's have very dedicated users and they offer a variety of barrel lengths and options. Lots of FAL sellers on the web...check out DSA.

My prefered grab and go Rifle is a Springfield Bush set in a Sage Enhanced EBR Chassis, and all kind of goodies from Fulton Armory.

PostPosted: Fri Feb 22,    Post subject: "Tanker" Garand Reply with quote

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question, but I'll apologize later if necessayr. After years of shooting (loving) my Springfield M1 Garand (late 1970's manufacture, with a short "tanker" barrel, and .308 cal), backed up with my favorite Series 70 Colt 1911 "Combat Government", which, BTW, is a really nice pistol, I decided to drag my Aggie butt into the 21st century. So, I bought a Glock 19, then a Springfield XD in .45 and an AR-15 flat top. For the same reason I bought the XD in .45 (I just like the round), I want a good .308 battle rifle. Now, not being made of money, I'm probably going to have to get rid of something, probably my .308 M1. How would you go about pricing something like that? I don't usually sell guns, but the one's I'm looking at as it's replacement are mui, mui expensive, so somethings gotta give.

Any guesses as to what this late '70s Springfield .308 M1 Tanker Garand is worth? Or how to go about figuring it out?

Thanks!

Bob

The evolution of cutting edge tactical gear continues...excellent.

As Spec knows, I attach four (4) M1A mag holders to an AR-15 Leg Rail....kinda crowded but it works. So, with M1A mag holders already in hand, please craft for me a stripped down M1A Leg Rail as your production schedule allows. Add a Glock Model 22 twin mag holder to the Leg Rail por favor.

rlwilk....don't sell the M1 brother...sell the house, dog, car, TV or kitchen table...but never sell the M1.
