LETC- Advanced Law Enforcement Training Camp, Provo Utah
Action Target Academy www.actiontarget.com

For about fifteen years now Action Target has been hosting one of the premiere LE training events in the world. They bring in the top instructors and provide a week of intense kick butt training from a different instructor and topic each day. Not only is the training outstanding but also the food is superb. All lunches are provided as well as an evening barbecue and the banquet dinner. I doubt that a LEO can find more training, fun, and food for the price anywhere in the country. But this camp is so much more than great food. Networking, equipment testing, and the training just cant be beat. I have been involved with the camp for about twelve years and it’s an event that I look forward to every year. We just finished an LETC in Provo Utah last week and it was excellent as usual. I tried to get photos of all the instructors but missed a few as I was a little busy teaching my course but check you the photos and you will see 1- Bank Miller, former director of SIG Academy now director of Action Target Academy, 2- Ben Kurata, Instructor Action Target Academy. 3- Dennis Tueller, Glock Instructor & father of the Tueller Drill (also a star of my Hands & Knife DVD, no really). 4- Mike Lenhner of Armor Holdings. 5- Tom Marx from Blackhawk. 6- John Krupa from Team Spartan. 7- and me shown with Dennis Tueller. 8- Me with Kyle Burdette (center) the Action Target Man behind the entire LETC, Great job Kyle. Action Targets Scott MaGreggor on the right is quite a shooter. I didn’t get photos of Bruce Spiewakoski (Shoot House), Peter Tarley, Police Training Division, Clyde Caceres with First Light USA, and Johnny Lee Smith, SSGT. But I did get a bunch of shots of camp participants kick butt and having a great time so check them out. We will be holding another LETC in Baton Rouge, LA this November, Dave Grossman will be lecturing as well. For more info go to www.actiontarget.com and click on law enforcement. This is a camp you LEO’s do not want to miss. Check out Action Targets line of target systems, backstops, and range systems...they are second to none.

After having just returned from this years LETC, I can completely agree wtih Hoff. The training was fantastic, the food was awesome, the opportunity to meet and network was spectacular. If you are a LEO, LEO firearms instructor, want to become a LEO instructor, you will not find better training for the money anywhere on the planet.

I fully intend to make this an annual training event for me and my staff.

Hoff and Tac:

I'm always watching what fellow cops are using for their training. WHat did you see weapons wise for the handgun, shotgun and rifle portions? Any issues with equipment or other things you saw? I would love to go and hope to next year, even if on my own dime and driving there from the Seattle area (something like 18 hours in my POV).

Tac, Thanks for being there, glad it served you well and hope to see you again next year.
Morris, for pistols I swa mostly 1911s and Glocks, with a spattering of Sigs of course and some others.
Rifles, mostly your standard variety of ARs, There were Robinson Arms there as well as the CEO of Robinson Arms viewing the Rifle Course. Saw an HK93 being used by a female, hooyah!
Shotguns were primarily Remington 870s & Mossberg 590s for pumps, and Benelli M1, M2s with some Remington 1187s for the semi-autos.

Alot of the LEOs were good to go with their weapons but lacking with their support equipment for magzine carriers. The Hoffners Spec-Rail Gear received alot of interest as the answer, particularly for patrol/first responder. Most ordered the Spec 4 Leg rail opting for the four accessory positions over two or three.

Good learning, good training, good equipment equates to prepared officer...good stuff!

Morris,
All the tracts that I took during the week were handgun oriented, so I can only comment on the pistols.

I saw that the majority of the shooters were carrying some form of Glock. There were numerous 1911's in attendance, a fare amount of Sig's, a couple of S&W M&P's (9mm & .45), a couple of Beretta's and at least one Springfield XD (Mine -.45 two tone long slide). I even shot one class with a guy who was using a H&K SOCOM.

As for problems, most that I saw were "shooter induced", like bumping the slide stop up on the Glock while using a "thumbs-forward" grip. I did see a couple of ammo related issues, but overall, the weapons used during my classes all ran as advertised.

I used two guns during my classes. My departmentally issued Sig P220 .45 with Surefire X200, and my Springfield XD .45 "tactical" (I hate that term. "Tactical" is an approach to problem solving, not a type of firearm. Sorry, RANT mode off.)

As far as gear, if you can imagine it, it was probably there in one form or another. I noticed alot of guys using thigh holsters, and a huge majority using their duty rigs during my classes. For those holsters, not of the duty rig configuration, KYDEX was the most prevelent, with the Blackhawk CQC Serpa lock holster the hands down favorite.

I used my duty rig for Bank Miller's "High Performance Handgun" class, as this is the rig that I spend most of my time in, and teach from the most. For Spartan Tactical Training Group "Reflexive Handgun" class, I switched to my Springfield XD and a Blackhawk holster set up, mostly for comfort and the need to have a higher capacity gun.

I teach/train with a large variety of handguns, between the state police academy, in-service training at my department and SWAT training. We have a very open policy regarding handguns, and allow a variety to be used. So I work hard to remain proficient with as many as I can. "One Warrior-All Weapons".

Thanks gents. I am always interested in what is going into the hands of cops and how their equipment used is shaking out.

The LETC is the best training that I have ever gone out for. The quality of instructors is always top notch! Everyone there is interested in learning and getting the most bang for their buck.

Just got back from the LETC in Zachary, La. Great Camp, just had five days of training from the best cadre of instructors in the world. High Performance Handgun with Bank Miller, Patrol Rifle Instructor with Ben Kurata, a day with Col Grossman. Shoot, Move, Communicate with Dennis Tueller, and Ultimate Shotgun with Brian Hoffner.

Boy, are my students going to get their money's worth! Thanks a million, Action Target, for getting these legends in one place at one time to train young warriors to go out and do good deeds. And to train old heads like me to pass on the knowledge.

From "the Oldest Man in the class". 61 and still training! Mr. Green

Guntrainer... I am with you there... Dollar for dollar, I don't think that LETC can ever be beat. I have trained with some high speed, low drag schools and intructors, and never gotten more from one trip than I did from LETC. Action Target deserves a big thank you for putting that event on, not once but TWICE a year at two different venues.
