Whatever pistol you carry you must train with it and know that pistol like it's your best friend and bride to be (I say bride to be because I know that so many let themselves, and their equipment go to pot after they get married...Don't let it happen). It is not enough to be accurate with your pistol. In a Gunfight, under extreme stress, you must effectively put your pistol into the fight and stop the threat with a vengeance. This requires an enourmous amount of practice so you might as well start with the right gun for you. Choose a quality brand pistol. You should already know what trigger action you prefer, single, double/single, or some form of DAO. I myself like consistancy. I want the same trigger press the first shot and every shot and I like a short reset so that pretty much leaves me with a single action type trigger. I like simple. I don't like lots of levers, and buttons. If your weapon has a safety lever then you gotta train with it and use it. If not it will get you killed or sued. Whatever pistol you decide on know it well and that will take alot of dry practice. Never take firearms safety for granted. Your primary safety is your brain. You have to think safe to be safe. Keep that *%X$# finger off the trigger until you have your sights on and Identified target and you have decided to fire. Know the other pistols too. I know I can pick up any pistol and fight with it, thats important. Choose wisely and get a gun safe because you will choose again. Train and carry with a particular weapon system type so your reactive brain won't fail you in the fight. Incidentally, I am pretty much a Glock and 1911 guy, they are great fighting pistols, although I do have others and like them and shoot them well also.
Choose well and train hard,

As with most everything else, I agree with Brian on this topic. I am a 1911 guy for the most part. That's what my dad taught me on, that's what I grew up shooting, that's mostly what we shot and carried in the navy and that's what I carried off-duty as a cop. While working here in the shop, I did carry a full size Hk USP .45 but went back to my Springfield Armory 1911 A1 (after finding that I can hit a man-size silhouette, 8" round pie plate and 6" square plates at 100 yds, the silhouette and 8" plate at 150 and then the silhouette at 200 yds). No way I could do that with any other pistol. By the way, that's not me bragging on me, that's me bragging on the boss' training!
Now, I have put the Hk USP in storage, the Springfield 1911-A1 is in it's storage/display case and I am carrying this amazing STI Tactical 5.0 that Jay Dunlap @ STI International had made for me. Thank you Jay and STI, love this gun!

I am a recent convert to the 1911. I carried a Berretta in the Military when I was lucky....usually not lucky. However the .45 caliber 1911 is the most accurate weapon. It is simple to shoot, maintain and my one solution for a hand gun. I am shooting the Springfield, and STI TACTICAL 5.0 1911s.

I carry a Gock 26 with a Grip Reduction and I love it.
I have a regular 10 round mag. with a plus 2 extention.
I also have a 15 and 17 round mag. for it.
It works perfect for me. |

Common Glock modifications include reducing the grip diameter, adding durable abrasive material to the grip area and beveling the magwell to improve tactical and combat loading speed.
A number of Houston shooters use Dale Hunnicutt at gripreductions.com for such services at very reasonable prices. Dale is in the Klein area and can be reached via 832.457.1562. |

I think it is a lot easier to choose a gun when that gun does not have to be carried or concealed. For open carry it is the most powerful gun that you can shoot the best.
For concealment it is the most powerful gun you can conceal, draw quickly and make the best shot placement. Matching body type to holster is important. |

My choice of carry is a Springfield TRP Operator. This .45 also has a full rail, it is usually looked upon by most as a little to much gun to carry. But I love it! Wheather concealed or other wise it is MY first choice in a pistol. I carry 3 Wilson 10 rd. Mags,1 in the weapon and 2 in my Hoffners M2 with a Tekloc.[ Product Plug ] I also use a variety of Hoffners Holsters and I have not used one that I did not like. My choice of ammo is Aguila I.Q. 117 grain Hollow point. It works for me. |

My current choice is the Glock 19 with an older S&W Model 60 as backup.
I had prior experience with a variety of sidearms (1911, Beretta, S&W) and my first CHL carry firearm was the S&W 908. After taking several of Hoffner's classes, I realized that I needed to focus more on shooting and less on what I was shooting, hence my move to the Glock. It is the ultimate "point and click" tool.
The 9mm is not a powerhouse, and many other firearms are made to higher quality standards, but for sheer simplicity it cannot be beat.

CCW pistol is a Glock 23
Stored Vehicle Pistol is a Glock 22
For me simplicity of operation, ruggedness, and realibility are paramount.
My Glocks work every time, all time, with out fail.
Been to many a training class (training is more important than weapon choice) where the 1911 guys had mutiple stoppages and failures. Not slamming the 1911, it is a good weapon, but my experience in many classes is that the 1911 guys have a lot more problems than the rest.
Glocks are not perfect, but the only in failure I have seen in a class on a glock was the failure of an extractor on a G21 which was very strange indeed.
Train, train, train.......... this is the MOST important thing you can do. |

Glocks . . . .17 w/ a / suppressed .22 upper for practice, 17L for proactice, Glock 20 and Glock 29 for CCW.
I practice with the same weapon system that I carry & I can hit a man sized steel plate out to 150 yards with the 17L. |

The very best gun in the world is the one that you have at hand when you need to use it.
My current favorite pistol is the Sig P229. The DA/SA is not for everyone but I have done a lot of shooting with revolvers and S&W 59s and 469s so I am accustomed to shooting DA and DA to SA transition. I attended a Sig classic (metal) pistol armorer's course at Blackwater last July. I have a pretty good understanding of this pistol and have spare parts and tools to keep it going for some time.
I have a Glock and 1911 also and if one of them is at hand when I need it, it may instantly become the best gun in the world.
