I recently finished reading Night Stalkers, a collection of stories about the founding and operational history of the 160th SOAR(A). The public first became aware of the Night Stalkers when two of their Blackhawks were downed in Mogadishu as chronicled in Mark Bowden's book Blackhawk Down and Riddley Scott's movie of the same title.
Each chapter of the book puts the focus on a different group of aviators and crew and their experiences on a particular mission. The founding members of the unit are represented along with operations in Grenada, Panama, the Persian Gulf, Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan, and back to Iraq. These gentlemen are the epitome of the warrior mindset displaying every bit of the elite behavior necessary to get their "customers" on target "plus or minus 30 seconds" in "zero illum" and all weather conditions. It's quite a ride. I hope others will enjoy it too. |
