1543 by Roger Crowley is an amazing chronicle of the seige warfare of Byzantine Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks. 8,000 Christian troops led by Constantine XI against 80,000 muslims led by Sultan Mehmet II. This non fiction reads like a novel in a vivid and intense tale of courage, cruelty, endurance, technical eginuity, and luck. The brilliance and courage of Italian Giustiniani and his 300 warriors dispatched to save the greeks and bizantium is what truly impressed me. Sultan Mehmet uses good strategy, superior technology with his giant seige busting cannons and impressive movements of ships over land, combined with an endless numbers of troops to outlast the defenders of Constantinople.
This book is important for the history and for the way it gets you into the heads of the warriors on both sides. It also helps to understand the history of war between Islam and Christianity.
a very good and important read, enjoy.
