Quoted from Sun Tzu's Art of War, Chapter 8 "The Nine Variables":

There are five qualities which are fatal in the character of a general:

1) If reckless, he can be killed;

2) If cowardly, captured;

3) If quick tempered, he can be provoked to rage and make a fool of himself;

4) If he has too delicate a sense of humor, he can be easily insulted;

5) If he is of a compassionate nature, you can harass him.

Now these five traits of character are serious faults in a general and in military operations are calamitous. They must be deeply pondered.
