At a base camp last week an Operator recommended that I exchange my Cold Steel folder for a state-of-the-art SOG automatic. I stated that in my opinion folders are more reliable and faster than automatics so, naturally, we had to put our theories to the test.

Having only average hand speed, in 8 out of 8 draws from the pocket ready position, I was able to arrive at both the pick and defensive ready positions probably 1/2 - 3/4 of a second faster with a 4" Cold Steel folder than could the Operator with a 5" SOG automatic.

From the 'deep pocket' position though, the automatic was faster as the Operator had his thumb on the release button and could activate the blade while exiting the trouser pocket.

Note: Hoff has stated many times during SoSu and Defensive Knife training that, from the pocket ready position, folders are faster than automatics, and he's right.

I'll stay with dependable, high quality folders...

SHOW THEM HOW WE DO THINGS HERE BOB!!! I agree with you 100%. I own over 200 knives, all different makes and models. I have at least a dozen spring assisted folders and can honestly say I dont carry them. I am extremely partial to my Cold Steel Recon Drop Point Tanto, half serated blade. I carry 2 of them always. In addition I sometimes will carry a fixed blade as well. Dont get me wrong, I love my 1911's. But there is something about my knives that makes things a little more personal. I think Cold Steel puts out some outstanding products for a very reasonable price. They are one of my favorite knives. Twisted Evil

I thought the Emerson Wave knives were the fastest from the pocket. I haven't found one faster myself.
