I just finished my first AK build from a kit, parkerized it and dialed it in. It was really frustrating but fun too putting the thing together with minimal tools and "adjusting it" with a big hammer, files and dremel tool. It now shoots anything I put in it, including battered HP ammo that it wouldn't feed before the gentle "adjustments" were made.
I love the rustic simplicity of it, and because it's inexpensive, you don't worry about making modifications...
any other closet AK fans out there?

I think there are loads of AK Closet fans, they just don't know it yet. We have ordered some kits and are going to have an AK assembly party, I'm sure we will learn much. It's a good low cost rifle to have.
All should at least know the AK, how to pick it up and operated it if need be.

We see AK's in every country we work. Without doubt, they are the most common, toughest, most dependable and easiest to operate assault rifle on the planet.
It's common to find AK's that are constructed with parts from different countries and they work fine. A full automatic, fixed stock AK in fair condition plus two 30 round magazines can be purchased on the streets of Bosnia for $150.00 if you pay with U.S. currency.
In troubled regions you will find 10 year old war veterans toting AK's and they will light it up without hesitation...most impressive. 7.62 x 39 ammunition can be found worldwide and these rounds are indeed potent.
Warriors need to thoroughly know this weapon. |

| Ok I have an AK47 and actually like the ballistics of the 7.62/39 round. My AK does not look as nice as Ultimark.com AK and cost less than the light on my AR. It is good to know how to operate other weapons especially the enemy’s weapon of choice. It’s also nice to know our Military uses the AR and all of the AR shooters know what I am talking about. |

I like mine but it is a pain to install if you use the after market Tapco front grips. You probably won’t take the front end of your AK apart very often once you install one.
Use tread lock on your scope rings, I have a hard time keeping them tight on my rig. For some reason I almost always paint the scope ring screws with something to keep them locked but this time I didn’t and I forget to do anything about it until I am ready to go shoot.
I have not found a factory scope/ring combo mounting system that will allow the iron sights to co-witness yet but I have some low profile scope mounts on my wish list. You might buy your initial mounts with that goal in mind if it is important to you.
A red dot mounted up front is really fast and handy on an AK. Some red dots have too large a dot for 100+ yd shooting. I had a hard time hitting the steel at The Impact Zone with a large dot but when I switched to a Tasco with several dot choices it became much easier to make the distance hits using the small dots. Perhaps with more practice I could have over come the problem though.
I found 1x to be faster for me than 2x when mounted forward. Up close and personal you don’t even have to have the scope turned on to get torso hits in a hurry.
I also think there is a good argument for the receiver based scope mounts. They are said to return to zero after being removed and reinstalled. A 4x scope that is easily removable yet returns to near zero seems pretty interesting to me. |
