Reading the posts about Brian and the new 9mm Kel-tec PF9 pistol triggered a memory from years ago and how my (new at the time)
Kel-tec P-11 probably saved my life or at least spared me a severe beating and possibly the rape/murder of the woman I was dating.
**I LOVE my P-11 because of the lightweight and with a mag extension the grip works great. I bet the PF9 is even better.
Brian is correct as usual that Kel-tec pistols are not 30,000 round guns or even 10,000 but mine goes bang everytime and hits the mark consistently.
I worked thru a few different ammo types and found some that functioned well and for the money it has been a fine weapon that I keep in my truck glove box always. Cor-bon DPX for those counter vehicle-rage occasions,/grin.**
The story...
In 1997 sitting around the house late one Friday afternoon my then GF and I decided it would be fun to drive down to the beach at Freeport,TX, mess around with a moonlight walk in the sand and then get a room and some sun the next day. We got down there around 10pm and found a deserted stretch and parked. We both had on swimsuits,T-shirts and flip-flops and I had one other item...My Permit/License,Kel-tec P-11 and a spare mag all in a f*nny pack around my waist under my shirt.
(I am a carry holster fanatic and have a method for any occasion)
She asked if I thought it was necessary since nobody else was out there and I said something like there might be wild dogs or whatever.
Anyway, we locked the car and started walking and talking,I remember it being a clear night with a nice moon, looking at seashells and walking in the water at the edge...totally in condition white..a big mistake on my part.
It was nearly Midnight and we had walked more than a mile from my car when headlights appeared from a drive thru in the sand dune a few hundred yards behind us... I instantly realized that we were cut off,not good.
At first I thought maybe a patrol officer was checking us out,but no such luck this night.
The vehicle passed us and it was an old truck with young males in the front and more in the back...I was thinking cr*p,cr*p,cr*p and told her we needed to start walking fast back towards the car. They turned around about 1/2 mile away and moved slowly back towards us. It struck me that they seemed practiced at this sort of thing. We picked up the pace but we were still far away from the car.
I will never forget my GF's words...she said,"What do they want? We don't have any money."
I said,"No,but there is something else here for men to be interested in."...her face got ashen pale and she said in a small voice "Oh,no."
They passed us again, the guys in the back hollering and laughing and the truck stopped facing us...close enough for them to see us but far enough away that with the headlights I could not see for sure how many were out there.
In case y'all have never thought about it there is not much good cover on a beach and all I saw was a barrel trash can with a log near it.
I moved quickly to the barrel and got her and I down behind it,they REALLY started laughing then.
They laughed until I held my right hand straight out from the barrel with the Kel-tec in it...mind you,the pistol is small and black but someone got the message and all laughter stopped. There was a lot of Spanish words being spoken really fast and then the truck started up and left.
Needless to say, we ran to the car and drove back to Houston that night. Funny thing, she sat right next to me and hugged me the whole way home...I said a few silent prayers of thanks, too. |
