Mr. Hoffner,

After your class at Goldendale, I was impressed with the concept of "Second Sight" and the method you used to impress it on us.

I took your concept and method of explanation and was able to leave an impression on my student officers at our recent range session.

I made sure to give you credit and suggested you to those officers I know will pursue training on their own dime.

I just wanted to pass a well deserved thank you your way. I believe the idea may well save the life of one of my student officers somewhere down the line.

Thank you again for putting that tool in my toolbox. I had a great time, and I know my partner Morris did too!

I appreciate your comments and thanks for passing it on. You can read more about second sight and scanning in the American Cop magazine 2008 Annual special edition as the re-ran my story tititled "Are we scanning for threats or performing a choreographed ballet"
Thanks for passing it along to your students, If we save but one cops life we have done our duty.

Am headed to teach firearms at our states LE academy, and have been told to incorporate new techniques, I will be adding "second sight" to the curriculum.

Getting paid to teach and shoot guns, is this country great or what!?

Life is great in these United States, especially when you are making a difference.

Ballet: that's funny because that was the term we used for our folks when it came to scans that Jack and I tried to break folks out of (the quick head nods).

As to second sight, it was a interesting to watch from an instructor perspective. From old salts to fresh recruits from the academy, it was two shots and near immediate dropping of the firearm to a 45 degree version low ready. Tells me that as instructors, we have been re-inforcing improper techniques in a fight and THAT would lead to tragic consequences.

Exactly,
We have to make sure that we do not plant an negetive preconceived Ooda loop in the head of our officers and instead conduct drills that require them to use the reactive brain, but controlled by the cognitive brain as they mentally work through the fight enagement loop:

Actively Scan
Perceive threat
Present SoSu to the threat
use the level of accuracy to Hit continually until second sight SoSu says that the fight is over
Then actively scan for the next fight

The fight including the scan, the fight, and second sight is extremely cognitive.

Here's one of my favorite pieces of advice from the Team Capt. that I remember from years ago.

When scanning for the threat they may be hiding. So, if you don't see them be sure to look where they might be hiding. This is sort of a crossover that has to be done simultaneously with seeing. You need to have the added capacity to visualize the threat.

In Brians classes we conduct multiple exsersises that deal with active scanning, these drills are directed towards the threat you can not see in a typical scan left scan right so the instructor wont yell at me drill.Brian teaches to really scan, scan as if your life depends upon it because it does!Students of Brians will know what I am talking about. These drills will generally catch a great deal of students using a stagnent scan. Those who trully scan will see the full picture and take care of the threat.Scanning is extremely important.Scan thoroughly,if you dont you may not get a second chance! Plus, you put on a heck of a demo for the "ballet!" Laughing
