Med-kits are a very important project that Cecil and I are working on at Hoffners. We are putting together a personal med-kit that has potentially life saving equipment such as Celox. We like Celox as a blood clotting agent. Celox reports that it stays cool in use and could halt the bleeding of a femoral artery. I have a working relationship with the CEO as they are based here in Houston. The kits are packed in a Molle pack so they can be attached to the American Defenders Vest but it’s a good idea to have a personal med-kit in every vehicle, at home, and at the office. Just imagine your loved one bleeding out and you can’t stop it….Got to have the med-kit.

Celox is becoming popular with private contractors and Ops. teams. If possible, would you bring a sample to the next American Defenders session and give a quick brief about this life saver?

I am in the process of switching over from Quickclot to Celox in my medical kits. Celox is reported to not produce the heat that Quickclot does. Celox also works in the extreme temperature ranges, and is easy to clean out of the wound. If you are looking for more information check out.

The EMS/ATLS is a great system. It is however, a reactionary system. We all know action beats reaction. They have to be notified of a problem, they have to find out exactly where you are, and be willing/able to get to you. All take time, something that you may be short on. So, we need to stay alive, until they arive.

In the Ranger Medic Handbook they list preventable causes of death in combat.
They shake out like this:
60% Bleeding to death from extremity wounds.
33% Tension pneumothorax
6% Airway obstruction (maxillofacial trauma)

I think that would be a good place to start. I think keeping the boo-boo kit seperate from the trauma kit is a good idea.

Personally, I have replaced all the QuikClot in my medkits with Celox, as well as medkits I have put together for my girl and family. I had the opportunity to speak at length with a rep from Sam Medical during the last anti-terrorism conference up in North Houston and I learned quite a bit about this amazing product.
I watched a video of a sedated pig where they cut the femoral artery on the pig and let it bleed out for 90 seconds. Then they simply swabbed the wound quickly with gauze and poured in the Celox, just like you would a battlefield wound. They immediately applied direct pressure for 5 mins, then removed the gauze. They wiped away blood that was lying on the surface around the wound and there was not a drop of blood coming from the wound. THEN, to simulate agitation of the wound in battlefield conditions, they grabbed the lower leg of the wound area and yanked on it several times, making the whole pig move... with no unclotting of the wound or bleeding at all. Next, they took forcepts and removed the congealed Celox clump from deep inside the incision area and AGAIN agitated the wound, trying to get it to bleed... nope.
The main differences between Celox over QuikClot that sold me are that:
-Celox does not heat up like QuikClot, causing further shock to the operator
-Celox will not blind you if granules get into your eyes or irritate soft tissue like QuikClot (I pointed out a torn sample package on the rep's table and watched as he then said "It's ok" and waved it in front of his face, powder and granules hitting his face with no problem)
-It is cheaper
-It will work on heparinized blood (blood of someone taking blood-thinners, etc)
-It works in extreme cold conditions (not that we have to worry about that here in Houston)

Yes,please when you get a chance a details of the kit contents would be very helpful. I know some of our folks are going to be interested in buying these medkits that Hoff and you are putting together. Pricing is important too because maybe we can put together a large group buy or at least tell people that it they are now available.
