One sunny day in Mogadishu I was sitting around with my fellow aviators at the "Tank Factory" waiting for our aircraft to be off-loaded at the port. Accross the street from us was an ammunition storage site controlled my a local warlords with three old Soviet tanks in front and several fixed checkpoints armed with crew served weapons.

A marine vehicle was cruising by and took fire from one of the checkpoints. They called it in and an armored vehicle showed up to make quick work of the malcontents. This got the guys in the tanks interested and they joined the fray. Next to arrive on the scene was a Marine Cobra.

The Cobra engages the tanks and then takes a hide position behind the warehouse we are sleeping in. The tanks decide to engage the Cobra "through" the building and begin to launch main gun and heavy machine gun rounds through the sheetmetal sides of the building. Every few minutes the Cobra would pop up and fire a TOW until all the tanks were destroyed.

Being inside that building, armed with only a Beretta, was a life altering experience. Small arms fire is one thing, but having tank main gun rounds pass your bunk will make you hug the ground closer than you ever thought possible.

Nobody, on our side at least, was hurt but we hurled every insult imaginable at the Marine pilot for using our "home" as cover. In good humor, he smiled and waved as he headed back to the airfield.

He was probably smiling as a result of the type of "waves" that you guys were giving him.
Thanks for your service.
