I have always been intrigued with the discipline, patience and technology of long distance shooting. The ability to consistently place 5 shot groups into a 12" target at 500 yards, regardless of weather or terrain, is a skill that is vital to victory on the battlefield or when harvesting elk at 300 yards.

The American Shooting Center (ASC) in West Houston has 50, 100, 200, 300, 500 and 600 yard lines. To qualify to shoot from the 400 and 600 500 yard lines, an ASC Instructor must certify that a shooter can place 5 consecutive shots into a 6" target from the 300 yard line.

Each Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., .50 caliber shooters meet at ASC to practice 600 yard shots.

Actually, the ASC longer ranges are 200, 300, 400, and 600. They will be closed this Sat Sept 1 for David Burton's AR class.

To the best of my knowledge the 50 cal club is unofficial. I wonder if they will let me shoot my lowly 308?

Hey I'm new to this far West side of town guys, but now I'm about 3 miles from ASC. I am not near ready for 500 yards shots, but sure would love to see .50s going down range again. Do you have to pay or be a member just to go watch this?

I stand corrected on ASC firing line distances and it's fine to come over and watch the .50 cals at work.

Shooters must be ASC qualified (5 shot, 6" group accuracy at 300 yards) to fire from the 400 and 600 yard lines and shooters often bring multiple benchrest and/or sniper systems. "5 shot group" competitions are common for bragging rights.

Saturday morning sessions are informal and non-sanctioned. It's a blend of LE and private sector to talk shop and put heavy metal down range; gotta practice to keep those groups tight.

Different topic:

Spec - Team up with an experienced long distance Tactical shooter that you are comfortable with who will teach you proper long distance shooting techniques, then hone your skills at 100 yards.

When you're consistently achieving 2" groups at 100 yards then combine 100 yard and 200 yard work. Begin with your "ballistic of choice" such as the 150 grain 30.06 round we discussed and it's all about learning how your weapon works with your mind and body. When you're consistently getting 200 yard hits in the 4" circle you're ready to start training at the 300 yard line where 6" groups are the objective.

At the end of the day, 12" groups at 500 yards with a Tactical weapon is good shooting.

Cecil,
I'm a member there. Let me know when you want to go and we will do some shooting. It will save you range fees.
