I was practicing at 300 yards today and was approached by a shooter who said he was getting good groups at 100 and 200 yards but could hardly get on paper at 300 yards.
OK, we set up at 100 yards and he was getting about 4 inch groups and I gave him body positioning, BRASS and other pointers. No major weaknesses so on to the 200 yard line where he was getting about 10 inch groups so we continued work on slow trigger squeeze on the exhale, concentration, body positioning, etc.
It was on the 300 yard line where shots were indeed going on and off paper (up, down, left, right) that a shooting fundamental became evident and that is the need to keep the butt of the rifle buried tight and deep into the shoulder well while keeping the rest of the body and mind in a quasi-relaxed state.
This shooter had a hunting rifle with a very straight stock so pulling and keeping the butt of the rifle deep in the shoulder well is not as easy as with sniper stocks that have vertical hand grip sections for keeping the weapon tight in the shoulder well.
We worked on that facet and he then placed 5 out of 5 shots in the 18 inch ring at 300 yards. He departed and I shot another round while focusing on that facet.
There are hundreds of variables involved in making consistent long shots and that's one of them. Making the long shot is 90% mental; know your gear and maintain a strong mind and body.

You are right Semper Fi. There is both science and math involved, can't wait for the Hoffners Precision Rifle program coming up in 2008...stay tuned.
