I picked up an Aimpoint 3x Magnifier in August and have trained with it since.

Bottom line, running magnified CQB drills using the "both eyes open" technique requires constant practice to stay at optimum performance and time constraints do not permit my regular practice. This is a clear case of equipment ability outpacing operator ability, therefore, I have chosen to run CQB AR drills using iron sights and iron sights/red dot (cowitness) targeting with no magnification.

The Aimpoint 3x Magnifier is fit to a LaRue Tactical quick disconnect mount so attaching the Magnifier to an AR takes a couple of seconds and makes possible highly accurate 50-150 yard red dot shots.

The Aimpoint 3x Magnifier is of highest quality and, in my opinion, is ideal as a quick attach optic to greatly improve mid-range (50-150 yard) red dot accuracy.

What's your experience with 3x Magnifiers?

I should have the first Hoffners Tactical Rifle in mid January. It will be outfitted with gas block and long rails which will allow me to mount CQB Optic (most likely EoTech or Aimpoint) and 3X magnifier behind it. I figure I will put the magnifier on the La Rue flip mount so I can co witness or get it out of the way quickly.

when I get the rifle I will probably load up my rifle and take a drive to the hill country.

Hoff,
Please keep me posted regarding the Hoffners/DPMS AR-15 field test schedule as I'd appreciate witnessing how well the system works with GG&G and LaRue rail components, the GG&G bipod, the Surefire M4 flashlight, and various AR-15 magazines.

Also if you wish, an array of ammunitions can be supplied to test the feeding and cycling characteristics of your system.

For what it's worth, I have GG&G's quick-disconnect on my rail for the Aimpoint 3X, right behind my aimpoint reddot. I love it... though, rarely do I actually need it. Semper, you're right on the money with what you said above, regarding it not being necessary at all in CQB and even urban. But at 100 yds, it sure comes in handy, as together, you can be surgical with that and a good dot like an Aimpoint.
I also agree with Brian about Larue's quick-flip mount; can't be beat in my opinion (I just happened to get my 3X and mount system in a 'deal').
I've also read/heard great things from operators about the 3X behind an Eotech.
