Just finished readin Marine by Burke Davis. This is a biography of Chesty Puller. Some of the themes that are constant throughout the book are:
Respect your enemy.
Mindset is more important that equipment.
You fight with whatever you have at the moment.
Offense is always better.
Quotes include:
“We’ve been looking for the enemy for several days now. We’ve finally found them. We’re surrounded. That simplifies our problem of getting to these people and killing them.”
“I want you to make’em understand: Our country won’t go on forever, if we stay as soft as we are now. There won’t be any America—because some foreign soldiery will invade us and take our women and breed a hardier race.”
"We’ll have to get over the idea that we’re the greatest people on earth in every respect, that we’re infallible and that no one else has ideas worth considering. One of the reasons we had to fight against odds on Guadalcanal was this insufferable American notion of superiority, and our carelessness in face of danger. It goes back to Pearl Harbor and far beyond.”
“What we are lacking, despite all our talk about fancy weapons systems, is the fundamental spirit that alone can produce great armed services.” |
