I'm signed up for this class and need a little advice about equipment. I'm not a gear junkie, I just want to have the right equipment for the class. As an aside, my wife took the ladies tactical pistol class a couple of months ago and she learned so much. I am truly greatful to Brian for this. She loved it so much that she has encouraged me to take all the Hoffner training I want. Very Happy

Anyway, back to my questions...

Optics: Should I use iron sights for this class or would I be better served bringing a red dot/reflex sight? My rifle has a non-removable carry handle, so the the sight would be out in front of the handle (or on top of it). I don't have a sight yet, but was planning to get one anyway. I just haven't decided on which one. I am leaning Aimpoint M2, but have heard some good things about a couple of the cheaper red dots too (SPOT).

Carry gear for pistol and mags: I was looking at some pics of what folks have used for the class in the past, and it appears that the wide nylon belt and spec rail setup from Hoffner is popular. Currently I have a CTAC (IWB) for my pistol and a leg drop for my AR mags. I have a good gun belt, but it is only 1.25" since I wear it around a lot. I am thinking this setup will be pretty uncomfortable by the end of a hot day, esp the IWB. Suggestions?

One more thing...Rifle zero: Should I zero in the rifle ahead of time at a specific distance (i.e. 50/250) or will that be something we do in the class.

Thanks for any input..

First of all congratulations to your wife for what she has accomplished and kudos for pushing you my way.

Iron First for rifle training. We need to be proficient with iron first and it will allow you to see different set ups with optics to help make your decisions.

If your CTAC IWB is your every day holster I would use it. There is nothing faster and efficient than the Spec Rail for carrying Rifle and Pistol Mags

It's good to keep it stored with your rifle so when you need rifle and ammo you have both fast. It latches on to any belt in seconds, snap the leg strap and you are good to go.
You can see and order here: http://www.hoffners.com/spec.htm

Acceptable Rifle zeros are 25, 50, and 100 all with pros and cons. Rifle sights are best set at 100 with the rear sight grounded (all the way down) that way anything longer can be doped and clicked to. Anything inside 100 is nominal and within the off-set of sights and bore. Please zero before attending.

Looking forward to the class and having you there.

Thanks for the quick reply. Iron sights it is. I'll bring the CTAC and probably order some spec leg rail gear. My rifle is currently zero'd at 50 with the rear sight grounded. I am looking forward to the class. See you in a couple of weeks.

Any plans to add another Tactical Rifle I class in Impact Zone after this one in the end of May?

I really would like to take one but I am not ready for the May class yet. I don't even have a rifle yet, plus Pistol classes won't be till the end of June.
