D-Day, 6 June 1944
It disturbs me greatly that so many Americans do not know the immensity
of what happened this day 64 years ago. Today’s youth has little or no
idea of the heroisms and the sacrifices of our American predecessors,
most know nothing about it at all and that is, in itself sad. As our
history dies away so does our country.

D-Day is what would put Hitler and his great German fighting machine on
the defensive. The Atlantic wall that took Germany four long years to
build was conquered in a day, Why? Because of the heroism of tenacious
American and allied warriors who would not accept failure. When
American troops got pinned down on beaches like Omaha by waves of
hellish gunfire and carnage, they took from within themselves, an
incredible initiative and stormed into the massive gunfire. Their
friends fell and died all around them but they continued to move on and
destroyed, in hard fought battles, the pill boxes one by one. The
Airborne Divisions and glider troops fought just as valiantly behind
enemy lines.

By the end of the day the bodies of ten thousand allied troops were
stacked on the beach like cord wood and many more would follow. Those
that survived this day would still sacrifice much through the coming
month and there would yet be so much gallantry from so many heroes who
only have a simple white cross in a French field to mark their lives.
They had no idea that when they stormed the beaches into so much blood,
agony, and death, that so few Americans would care only a half century
later.

I will be Damned if I don’t care, if I don’t remember. I will
take time today to pause A moment, think about the heroic
deeds of our fighting men this day so long ago and I will ask you to discuss it with
your children. So that as generations pass, the greatness of this day
and the lives sacrificed will resonate throughout history. We cannot
allow it be lost to the pathetic apathy that runs so rampant in our
country.

May we take the spirit of the American soldier of D-Day and instill
within ourselves a drive to make ourselves a better person, our families
stronger, and our country what these men gave their lives for!
God Bless the souls of so many heroes this day, 1944.
