I love sword/stick fighting. When I was younger we used to pad up plastic pipes with pipe insulation and duel. Long ago, in my search for advice on swordplay I came across the Book of Five Rings. here are some quotes from Miyamoto Musashi's book:
.....not once did I fail to be victorious. After that I went to different provinces and met with swordsmen of the various schools, and had over sixty bouts with them. I did not lose even once.....
.....the way of the warrior is the resolute acceptance of death.....
.....In both weapons and other things, one should not be biased in one thing over another. Too much is the same as too little. Do not mimic or imitate others; one must have a weapon appropriate to one's size and comfortable in ones hand. It is bad for either commanders or rank and file soldiers to have likes or dislikes.....
.....no matter what position you take, do not think of it as a position; think only of it as a process of cutting....
The translation is a short and an easy read. This guy is a legend. Lived to a ripe old age. He fought his battles with long sword, short sword, wooden swords, oars, and fencepost, etc. Very interesting character. There are other good books out there abot his life. If anyone has copies of any of these, please list them here. Thanks. |
