I just finished my first AK build from a kit, parkerized it and dialed it in. It was really frustrating but fun too putting the thing together with minimal tools and "adjusting it" with a big hammer, files and dremel tool. It now shoots anything I put in it, including battered HP ammo that it wouldn't feed before the gentle "adjustments" were made.

I love the rustic simplicity of it, and because it's inexpensive, you don't worry about making modifications...

any other closet AK fans out there?

I think there are loads of AK Closet fans, they just don't know it yet. We have ordered some kits and are going to have an AK assembly party, I'm sure we will learn much. It's a good low cost rifle to have.
All should at least know the AK, how to pick it up and operated it if need be.

We see AK's in every country we work. Without doubt, they are the most common, toughest, most dependable and easiest to operate assault rifle on the planet.

It's common to find AK's that are constructed with parts from different countries and they work fine. A full automatic, fixed stock AK in fair condition plus two 30 round magazines can be purchased on the streets of Bosnia for $150.00 if you pay with U.S. currency.

In troubled regions you will find 10 year old war veterans toting AK's and they will light it up without hesitation...most impressive. 7.62 x 39 ammunition can be found worldwide and these rounds are indeed potent.

Warriors need to thoroughly know this weapon.

Ok I have an AK47 and actually like the ballistics of the 7.62/39 round. My AK does not look as nice as Ultimark.com AK and cost less than the light on my AR. It is good to know how to operate other weapons especially the enemy’s weapon of choice. It’s also nice to know our Military uses the AR and all of the AR shooters know what I am talking about.

a build party? Another reason to build one more!!! Very Happy

PS does the ultimak mount have a downside, and what optics do you use for them?

I like mine but it is a pain to install if you use the after market Tapco front grips. You probably won’t take the front end of your AK apart very often once you install one.

Use tread lock on your scope rings, I have a hard time keeping them tight on my rig. For some reason I almost always paint the scope ring screws with something to keep them locked but this time I didn’t and I forget to do anything about it until I am ready to go shoot.

I have not found a factory scope/ring combo mounting system that will allow the iron sights to co-witness yet but I have some low profile scope mounts on my wish list. You might buy your initial mounts with that goal in mind if it is important to you.

A red dot mounted up front is really fast and handy on an AK. Some red dots have too large a dot for 100+ yd shooting. I had a hard time hitting the steel at The Impact Zone with a large dot but when I switched to a Tasco with several dot choices it became much easier to make the distance hits using the small dots. Perhaps with more practice I could have over come the problem though.

I found 1x to be faster for me than 2x when mounted forward. Up close and personal you don’t even have to have the scope turned on to get torso hits in a hurry.

I also think there is a good argument for the receiver based scope mounts. They are said to return to zero after being removed and reinstalled. A 4x scope that is easily removable yet returns to near zero seems pretty interesting to me.

I have a Yugo underfolder and love it, I have shot AKs last year at Hoffs Victoria class, it was a borrowed Polytech 223, never missed a beat and I think I finished 4th in the shoot off. I was the only AK!!!

A couple of weeks ago at American Defenders I shot my Yugo for the first time and I think Hoff will say it worked out well. I went back to Impactzone the next week to double check the sights and the were right on out of the box

It is not as fast in a couple of scenarios, mag changes and safety on off. But If I was fighting the safety would be off, so I think the slight edge on mag changes can be overcome with more practice

I have the MAK-90(MAK just means Modified AK) short tactical stock, all customized and about 1500 rounds of ammunition for the simple reason that,as Semper Fi has mentioned, it is a weapon system known around the world and is very potent against body armored enemies.

NOTE**My only reservation about the AK-47 is that on American soil it screams terrorist!! and might make me a target of substantial friendly fire, lol. The police also get very nervous around them and will bring down very heavy response on those wielding an AK-47 as cops have been on the receiving end of them most of the time

Not having worked with it as much as my AR-15 the mechanical skills of the reload are not as familiar to me. BUT it is on my to do list this year to bring my AK-47 techniques up to speed as I have my others and Impact Zone is a great place to do it.

Lots of cr*p on youtube but here are a few cool vids showing the fastest ways to reload the AK-47 maybe you can make them work for you.
A goofy looking guy in the first one but his technique is good, and the second one is an Iraqi sargeant giving a demonstration to some of our great soldiers over in Iraq. Second one shows both the old and the newest methods. Last one is the one I have practiced most for competition reasons(round counts not an issue, like a real battle might be) but I still like the AR-15 for that.

Enjoy and hope to see you at the next American Defenders.

Over Thanksgiving I visited my brother in San Antonio. He pulled out his "stimulus check" purchases - a Rock River AR15 and an Arsenal SLR107 (AK-47 clone). Both were nice, but the AK was a big suprise to me.

I have fired the AK and admire it's reliability and simplicity but did not have a desire to own one. After handling one over the holidays, I've changed my mind.
