| Just curious: Does anyone here take the Mini-14 seriously for tactical use? Does anyone use one for Hoff's rifle training? If so, what configuration/modifications are recommended? |

Not necessarily a tactical platform, the 16.25" barrel .223 caliber Ruger Mini-14 is nonetheless a serious weapon. It's time proven and tough and works well straight out of the box; performance can be enhanced by adding an optic and a bipod.
Its base weight is about equal to a stripped 16" barrel M4 and I believe the Mini 14 offers excellent reliability and fire power at an attractive price.
I've seen Mini 14's at federal correction facilties and on ranches but have not seen any in the sand box. www.ruger-mini-14.com has some interesting comments about Mini 14 accuracy.

| I've had two of them. Both horribly inaccurate, but very reliable. |

In the April 2008 edition of Guns & Weapons For Law Enforcement, page 10, there is a very good article about Accuracy Systems, Inc. improving the Mini 14's accuracy.

| Texas DPS uses them but their not too popular umongst most professionals. One reason is that there is not much you can do for add-ons. They are fun to shoot. it would be interesting to see if one could survive my class. |

a number of years ago, I did bring a Mini-14 to the 2-day Tactical Carbine class in Victoria. I was ok, but in the standard configuration, it did not work well in many alternate shooting configurations, compared to the AR-15. It's front heavy and hard to hold, when on your side, or upside down... At the next class, I brought a battle proven weapon and left my Mini-14 at home. |

Scott,
Is that the Robinson that Ben Kurata shoots?

The mini-14 is a good rifle, but the magazine attachment leaves a lot to be desired. The magazine has a hole for a 1/8 inch pin to catch on, them cams into the magazine well. You have to hook the magazine on this pin just right.
Go with an AR-15 instead.

The Texas DPS has moved over to the AR-15 |

John Masen sells the .'Black Warrior' magazine for the Mini14, it is currently the best aftermarket Mini14 magazine.
If you feel uncomfortable with the both the AR15/Mini14, why not buy an AK and accurize it? I will be pposting an article on that subject today, on this website. |
