Before starting this I just want to say a pre-qualifier statement...
I truly love and admire women and if anything I write here is somehow misconstrued as being sexiest or not PC then please forgive me..that sure as heck is not my intention. This is mainly for the guys and as always I hope others will chip in ideas on what has helped with their ladies.
For the last 20 years or so,many of the women in my life that I cared about...from Gf's,to my nieces, and just good friends have all had the opportunity to shoot a handgun with me. Not instruction really, but it is amazing that most women I have met have either never fired any type of firearm or if they have it was just pulling the trigger with their father or grandfather on a rifle or shotgun when they were children.(not all daughters can be as lucky as Brian's and have an awesome police firearms instructor for a Dad)
From the 4'10" kindergarten teacher I dated in 1985 who stayed awake shaking in her bed with fear from night noises until I got her a S&W Ladysmith .38, all the way up until the last one, Nanette, who was 5"11" and became a Xena:Warrior Princess with her Glock 26 and 19.
Like the Israeli's,I believe all stable minded women (just as men have to be) should be armed and take qualified instruction on the use of a handgun, and later if they want carbines, rifles, and shotguns.
The single greatest threat to a woman today is a man. Everyday we hear of beatings and murders of women by Ex's,husbands,Bf's and such and it is heartbreaking everytime.
If you have females in your life or sphere of influence that you care about then do everything you can to convince them to think and live defensively.
There is no better "restraining order" than a confidently presented pistol.
A female encouragement tip-
**An old sea captain friend, long dead now, taught me one of the greatest lessons I ever learned about women. He said they are like a mirror...if you project patience, caring, love, and confidence to them then they will reflect the same back to you and add more of their own. If you are intolerant, condescending, impatient, and inflexible then she will reflect it back to you in spades.**
We need to be getting our women to the gun ranges. Be considerate and don't "dump the truck on them" with all your skills...let her get comfortable with the bang sounds, glasses, other gear, and let her grow. Many ranges like Top Gun have a ladies night, anything that gets them there and shooting as often as possible will help them.
Then...
Get her qualified training and practice with her so she can maintain her skills like you do.
Women only classes like Brian offers I think are very good to get them over initial anxieties. NOT competitions at first, while some flourish in a competitive environment with men, most will drop out after just a few outings. Training, with or without you,yes...competitions much later if ever.
Your lady is your partner. Work with her and help her have confidence to defend herself and maybe, just maybe one day it will be her that puts a bullet between the eyes of a bad guy that you never even knew was there. |

Most assuredly! An SKS makes an excellent first long gun for anybody, Wolf SP doesn't overpenetrate, IME. |
