Before buying an AR-10, check out FAL's at dsarms.com. Model SA58TACP highlights are:

1) Fires 7.62mm x 51mm (.308 winchester) ammunition;

2) 16.25" barrel;

3) Folding Para-stock;

4) 10 and 20 round magazines available;

5) Rail system for optics, lights, etc.;

6) Sells for US$1,845.00 through DSA;

I like the feel and carry of this weapon and know troops and contractors that won't carry anything but FAL's.
Better quality than any AK-47 I've seen and a more powerful ballistic than the AK which fires the 7.62mm x 39mm round.

I personally like the 18 inch barrel versions as it offers a practical length for ballistics versus portability.

Yeah, a nice semi-custom Para Congo is in my eventual future to go with my 18 inch barrel carbine. My trouble is that the FAL stock fits perfectly into my shoulder while the para stock plate curve take a bit to get used to.

DSA is now the only player for FALs with no more receivers and parts kits being imported.

Short barreled 7.62's with folding stocks have gotten popular in the green zone where troops and contractors are constantly entering/exiting vehicles and carrying weapons 24/7.
18" and 20" barrels are more in line with 7.62 ballistics and folding stocks flex a bit thus reducing accuracy at all distances.
AK-47's and short barreled NATO 7.62's are preferred weapons in Iraqi cities...

How short are the barrels running? Maybe DSAs OSW type length?

Here is a short list of 7.62 x 51 (short barrel) carbines we often see in the Middle East/North Africa region that are available for public, documented purchase.
14" barreled systems can not be brought into the U.S. legally without USFFL and U.S. Customs documentation in hand.

DPMS .... 16"
FAL .... 14" (Belgium)
FN .... 14" (Belgium)
Fulton Armory .... 16"
HK .... 14" (Germany)
Galil .... 14" (Israel)
JP Rifles .... 16"
Kar ... 16" (Germany)
Rock River .... 16"
SKS .... 16" (Russia)
Steyr .... 14" (Hungary)
And of course AK .... 14" (Czechoslovakia, Russia, etc.)

The FAL carbine, the ultimate all around rifle; alas, I'm stock with an AK.
