Recently a Law Enforcement team that I trained located a crook that they had been trying to apprehend for weeks. The crook was rolling so the chase was on. The chase ended when the crook crashed but it was not over, instead he decided to shoot it out with the LEO’s. The LEO’s returned fire and hit him repeatedly in the extremities and torso with no effect. It was not until a bullet hit him in the forehead, took a large chunk of skull out of his head, and literally exposed the grey matter of his brain that he apparently got aggravated threw down his gun and yelled “That’s enough, I quit, y’all shot me five times”. The fact of the matter is they hit him eight times.

Facts: Bullets are not magic, they do not make a person fly through the air, through a plate glass window and die instantly. They merely make holes in flesh and bone. There is a good chance that the bad guy is highly motivated to escape and not all that impressed by the hole(s) your bullets make in his body, so you better be ready for the fight to continue. We, the good guy, have the right to go home at the end of the day therefore; when the bad guy places us in a position of imminent serious bodily injury or death, that bad guy is making a request. He is requesting that we stop him or die. We have no choice but to abide by that request and stop him with as much accurate fire as it takes until they are stopped and the fight is over. “To shoot or not to shoot, that is the question” (Shakespeare, modified Hamlet). The fight is not over until second sight “SoSu” (Sights –on, Slack-up) says the fight is over. Only then do we come off the trigger and scan for the next fight.-Hoff
