|

Hi guys,
Haven't posted....just been lurking a while. I bounce questions off of Hoff via e mail now and then for advice and such. )
I'm selling several pistols (3 1911's and a FN 5.7). Is my ass covered legally if I make a copy of their TDL and fill out a bill of sale with date, weapon, serial number. I don't want some gang banger to get hold of one of these 5 or 10 yrs from now and have something come back on me....know what i mean.
thanks,
jim |

I'm not sure of Texas state laws, so take this for what it is worth. Several states allow selling of pistols between individuals without restrictions. With that said, it is always a good idea to have their ID, weapon type, barrel length, serial #'s, model and caliber readily available. There should be in Texas a web site where you can look up laws and codes governing weapon transfers.
In my opinion, the best way if you are unsure of laws or who you would be selling the weapon to, be safe, go to a FFL dealer. They can take care of the paperwork. There will be a NIC's check and records kept. These records will also reflect that you sold the weapons, and you will be clear of any future actions. FFL dealers normally charge a small service charge for doing these type of transactions, but, you can sleep much better. |

yeah I usually order my guns online and out of state to avoid taxes and have sent to an FFL here in Houston who charges $25 for the transaction.
Never sold any of mine before. I may just document every friggin detail, photograph their ID's and CCL's if they have them, and I should be OK me thinks. |

Youve got it right. Two copies, one for the buyer, one for you. Date of sale, weapon description, and serial number, is pertenant. You are not responsible for what is done with the gun after that date, but; morally you would not sale to someone who gives you that uneasy feeling.
