These are some of my favorites. I apologize if not all the links are active but you should be able to locate most with the info provided.

Many of the books with the best messages are not the strongest in plot, style or character development. It seems that one can tell a great story with style and little or no message but conveying an important message makes telling a strong and entertaining story in epic style a difficult task. If I noted somewhere that the style was weak then know that the book was included because it had an important message but that most shee-people won’t read it for simple entertainment purposes.

Jungle Snafus ... and Remedies (Hardcover)

Written by a guy that actually trained soldiers in the jungles and designed or fixed much of the field gear used by army.

Desert Survival Skills (Paperback)

Really good book on the outdoors. David Alloway worked in Big Bend for many years and is the only non-Australian to successfully cross the Great Outback Desert on foot. Much of what you read in other books has not been tested by the authors and it could get you killed. Chapter on solar stills is worth the price of the book. What little I have done or experienced (compared to David) in remote places supports the info that I read in this book.

Not as big a concern now for many people but that may change in a few years as China develops better rockets. Just so you know, you can survive if you prepare. It is easier than you think. Ever wonder how to build your own radiation detector at home with simple materials? Read this book and find out how. The author researched much of this info for the US government and Civil Defense.

I liked it. Thinking of reading it a second time. There may come a day in the U.S. when this info is helpful. Title sounds more radical than the book really is; I wish they had called it something else. This book is interesting because if 90% of your neighbors read and followed this book, you would never realize it and the country would be much better off. Socialists will hate this book, a good enough reason for me to read it again.

Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse (Paperback)
by James Wesley Rawles
Read it for the ideas and concepts, not the style. This is a How To book inserted into a story. Read it twice, may do it a third time. Christian Boy Scout types take on the UN in a Second Great Depression with a dash of “how to” mixed in. There is an expanded version with more chapters that I have not read.

"The Next War" by Weinberger
Interesting book by former SecDef that contains scenarios from various war games the US Government allegedly played via computer simulations.

"Every Spy a Prince" by Raviv and Melman
Book on the inner workings of the Mossad. Covers some interesting training and some special ops.

"Blackhawk Down" by Bowden
Good book, well researched. I spoke to one well known person that was there, he says it represents events very well.

I thought 3.5 stars (out of 5). I liked the book for “what the country could be, or rather, how it should be’. Strong on ideas, weak on individual character development. Somewhat of a follow up to The Mitzvah but not a sequel. Can be read alone but references some characters in the Mitzvah. Read ‘em both.

Mandatory Reload

Sequel to “B-Zone” which I haven’t read but plan to. Basic premise is a talented IDPA shooter is recruited by a secret government organization as a shooter to solve “sticky situations”. Unfortunately the government has recruited a very talented guy with ethics. The author is a shooter so details that matter to our types are accurate.

Blown Away
By Shane Gericke
This is your basic “rookie cop is taken under the wing of the wise old veteran and faces down evil”. The author is not W.E.B. Griffin but he is regular writer for one of the major gun mags so he gets automatic inclusion here since the story and writing are pretty good. There are no semi-automatic revolvers in this story.
