First of all, in addition to Hoff there is a core group of contributors to this forum that I want to say thanks to. Being a newbie to most of this stuff I have been lurking on the sidelines for a while trying to learn as much as possible. Due to all of you who contribute to this forum regularly it has been time well spent.
I am signed up for Tactical Shotgun training coming up next week. I will be shooting a Remington 870 12 gauge, 18-inch barrel, Improved Cylinder choke, with a standard stock (non-collapsible). The web site description for the class mentions 400 rounds of shot and 25 slugs will be required. I already have several hundred rounds of No. 7-1/2 shot (2-3/4 inches, 3 Dr. Eq., 1-1/8 oz). Would these rounds be acceptable for the training? Considering the universe of 12 gauge ammo available, for a Remington 870, anybody have suggestions for what round would be particularly effective for the training class?
Thanks again to Hoff and all you warriors!

Wez,
This will be intense, high end training and if you have extra 12 gauge ammunition, bring a couple hundred extra rounds. |

I train with 2-3/4", #8 shot, 1-1/8 oz. target loads in a Mossberg 500 12 gauge pump.
For 12 gauge slugs, I train with, and carry, Remington 2-3/4" 1560 fps, 1 oz. Slugger ammunition. |

Semper_Fi, I appreciate the input on the shotgun ammo and the tip to be sure to bring extra rounds. Thanks.

WEZ, I just wanted emphasize the importance of having a sling on your gun. You're going to be holding that thing practically all day and like Semper_Fi pointed out, putting plenty of rounds through it - most likely waaay outside the norm of what you normally put through that gun in a single shooting session. I learned my lesson the 1st time when I did *not* have a sling for my shotgun. It's hard to safely carry the gun in a Sul position, much less tactical and combat reload, when your wrist is going numb.

For those who plan to attend Tactical Shotgun II training and have not trained or operated with single point slings, I advise that you wear a collared shirt or a high neck T-shirt as single point slings make contact with the neck where a regular T-shirt collar ends and skin begins. Could make a difference over 2 days.
Anyone out there getting 12 GAUGE PUMPed up??? Hoooyyyaaahhh |

Being a new forum, I'm not sure if we have moderators on here yet guys and I just realized... this thread should be under shotgun training. OH well, we're learning. We'll moderate ourselves a little better in the future when we have more sheepdogs logging on, looking for info about Hoffners shotgun training, etc. If it's not in the right spot, they might not find all this good info you all are putting out there.
Just a thought. I will do better next time. |

Wez, Bring your 7 1/2s, They will be just right. Specrat is right, although ammo is equipment its still kind of a crossover to training. I'm just glad you all are using the forum to exchange info, keep it up. We will definately debrief in the training category.
