Captain Blood
Rafael Sabatini
The original Copyright was in 1922. I think this book has been made into a movie at least three times. Earl Flynn was in at least one of them which demonstrate the story’s timeless appeal. I actually thought there WAS a real pirate named Captain Blood until I read the book.
While this might not be a book for every modern day gunfighter it may have a certain appeal to some. The hero in this book, while fictional, is one that I consider to be truly heroic.
I also have a particular fondness for the literature of this time period. They KNEW how to insult someone back then and it wasn’t with a string of four letter words. Imagine the hero and the villain, sword clashing against sword as they fight for the life of the fair maiden. One curses the other “you son of a cur dog”. I just have to chuckle as I root for the good guy.
This is a fun, well written story with interesting characters that posses honor and integrity that is not situational. I find the story enjoyable and I wouldn’t have any problem with the language or contents if my teenage son or daughter read this.
Another good one by Sabatini is “Master At Arms”. |
