Hoff,
At American Defenders, we train with pistols, rifles and shotguns and everyone benefits when all students arrive at American Defenders training with their AR-15's and long rifles already zeroed.
Please advise at what distances you suggest we zero our AR's and long rifles for AD training. |

At the Goldendale class, a small spirited side discussion came up about this.
I'm becoming a serious fan of the 50 yard zero and have a trajectory card that shows no greater than 2.5 inches of rise or fall over the sightline within any reasonable .223 distance.
I'd be curious to see what he has to say too. |

There is no right or wrong as long as you KNOW what you have and have the other distances doped out. My AR's Iron and ACOG is zeroed at 100. Anything inside one hundred is no more that the off-set low (2.5"). Everything over 100 is doped for reference. The ACOG with 4X is sweet at 100 yds but slow at CQB distance therefore I have a J-Point sitting on top for fast aquisition of close-up threats. Not a bad system but I am going to expirement with other set-ups.

Each weapon is mission specific and here are my zeros:
AR-15 16" barrel .......... 50 yard zero
AR-10 20" barrel .......... 100 yard zero
M1A 22" barrel ............. 200 yard zero
Barrett M82 29" barrel .. 600 yard zero |

Hoff,
Have you experimented with quick-disconnects that allow the removal of a scope from a rail and gets you on iron sights in a few seconds?
GG&G makes an excellent rail style quick-disconnect that re-attaches quickly and accurately. |

Semper Fi, I have no choice with my AR. I have an ACOG on it which means that I cant iron sight through like you can with reflex sights like Eotech, so I have my ACOG attached to a GG&G base with levers. It comes off and goes on fast without losing zero. I don't forsee having to pull it off but you still have to plan for it. The problem is; when you pull it off, if necessary, in the heat of battle you gotta make sure you don't lose it...maintaining zero means nothing if I can't find the sight.
