Reconnaissance operators often capture images and transmit the raw image, GPS coordinates and other information in real time mode to processing centers for analysis. Processed data and other factors then determine a mission's path.
Infrared, ultraviolet and standard images can be captured through rifle scopes using SLR, fiberoptic and other systems then transmitted 'up-link' for processing and analysis. In this mode, the rifle scope serves as a camera lens.
High powered, high quality variable power rifle scopes are information gathering tools which is why scopes such as the NightForce 12-42x 56mm scope is one of the preferred optics in the reconnaissance community.
